As the rut approaches, bull elk become increasingly aggressive, such that that the mere sight of a rival can initiate a fight.

Sometimes a barrier such as a fence stands between the combatants. Posts and wire stand no chance against the power and might of these fighting beasts. On rare occasions, these fights become humorous, as with these two monsters separated by a highway guard rail. Jon Timmer caught all the action in this video.
